Turbine and impeller flowmeters are often used when high accuracy is required in a limited space. In practice, the question often arises as to the most suitable measuring principle for measuring flow: turbine flow meter or impeller flow meter. Both measuring principles are similar.
While more accurate measurement results are often possible with turbine flow meters, impeller flow meters are often cheaper.
Measuring principle turbine and impeller flow meter
The flowing medium rotates the internal vanes of the meter. This rotary movement runs axially to the direction of flow (turbines) or at a 90° angle to it (impellers). The speed of the impeller is proportional to the volume throughput over a wide range. It is tapped and evaluated without contact as a pulse frequency via magnets on the wing tips.
Current flow measurement values and/or flow totals can be displayed with downstream evaluation electronics. To do this, the device must be calibrated in advance.
Typical applications of turbine and impeller flowmeters
Turbine and impeller flowmeters are preferably used to measure and monitor aqueous and low-viscosity media when little space is available.
